In a medical lab context, this is typically associated with making sealing plugs for micro-hematocrit capillary tubes.
The device takes a prepared block of sealing clay and, with a mechanical plunger action, extrudes a small, clean, perfectly sized wad of clay. The technician presses the end of the hematocrit tube into this clay plug to seal it before centrifugation. An auto clay unit ensures that each seal is exactly the same thickness and that there is no manual handling contamination of the sealing material.
